Primary Accountability:
The OR Supervisor will be held accountable for the delivery of safe, direct and indirect patient/family centered care through the continuum of perioperative care to include outpatient surgery, preoperative care, operating room care, post-anesthesia care, sterile processing, and anesthesia services. It will be the responsibility of the OR Supervisor to oversee the workflow and monitor, direct, and coordinate all functions of OR services that are provided at Gove County Medical Center (GCMC) in accordance with facilities policies and all applicable laws and regulations.
Major Duties:
- Oversees management of perioperative services operationally and fiscally.
- Verifies that perioperative personnel provide safe and effective patient-centered care in perioperative services.
- Prepare work and call schedules with Acute Care Director of Nursing, assign personnel, evaluate work performance and make recommendations for personnel actions in a timely manner.
- Function as circulator, scrub or instrument tech/nurse, and recovery nurse as needed.
- Develop, implement and maintain departmental policies and procedures.
- Informs the CEO of activities, needs, and problems arising in the department and assists with problem solving.
- Coordinates nursing activities with those of the surgeons and CRNA to provide for the care of patients.
- Demonstrates effective communication, consultation, negotiation, and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders.
- Acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of all appropriate information.
- Maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
- Delegation of responsibilities to professional nurses and assignment of duties to recovery nurse, floor nurse, and central supply staffs.
- Supervises central supply staff and their duties, delegates responsibilities as appropriate.
- Directs maintenance of department facilities, equipment, supplies and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health comfort, and safety of patients and staff.
- Plans for and supervises the nursing activities within the entire OR suite or specific room(s) to which he or she is assigned.
- Attends meetings as required and participates on committees as directed.
- Assists with interviewing, hiring, and orientation of new staff members.
- Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control policies.
- Collects and analyzes data related to quality assurance or performance improvement projects that apply to perioperative services.
- Assures that educational resources are available for perioperative services personnel and holds personnel accountable for compliance with established standards.
- Demonstrates sensitivity to patient’s comfort and privacy and expresses interest in their progress.
- Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards.
- Assures that appropriate personnel equipment, and supplies are available and equipment is functions properly.
- Verifies departmental compliance with organizational policies and procedures and regulatory and accreditation standards.
Qualifications:
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Kansas.
- Must have the following upon hire:
- BLS Certification
- NRP Certification
- ACLS Certification
- PALS Certification
Physical Demands:
- Pushing and pulling heavy objects.
- Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients
- Eye/Hand, Eye/Foot, Hand/Foot Coordination.
- Normal eyesight, with or without corrective lenses.
- Normal hearing, with or without hearing aides.
- Standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
- The ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
- The ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
Work Environment:
- Well-lit work area.
- Working under stressful conditions – physically demanding, high stress environment.
- Working irregular hours including after hours and on call.
- May be exposed to blood and bodily fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions.
- Work with people under all conditions.
- Requires judgement/action, which could prevent the death of a patient.
