The Outpatient Surgical Service (OSS) Nursing Assistant (NA) is a key member of the OSS team. The role of the NA is to provide patient care, assist staff, patients and their families during their pre- and post-procedure stay in the OSS. The OSS is located at the VA Palo Alto Division and operates multiple procedural suites providing a broad range of OSS services. The incumbent is responsible for providing direct patient care and/or assistance to patients and the OSS team. Duties include assisting with patient intake, verifying patient identity, assisting patient to change into gown and hooking patient to monitoring equipment. Assists, as assigned, in observation and care of stable pre- and post-procedure patients. Assists with transferring and transporting patients to and from the OSS -procedural area via gurneys or wheel chairs. Assists nurse when he/she administers medications and/or treatments. Carries out special treatments and assists with procedures including follow-up care and observation. Assist with patient education according to the extent of the NA's knowledge. Perform other duties as assigned. In addition the NA is responsible for: Direct Patient Care: Utilizes two patient identifiers when bringing patient to intake area. Is alert to changes in vital signs, respiratory distress, and level of consciousness. Assists with transport of patients to other departments. Appropriately initiates CPR and requests assistance for emergencies arising during transport. Recognizes significant changes and reports immediately to the professional nurse. Assist patient with hygiene needs post procedure. Consistently practices proper hand hygiene, proper disposal of biohazardous waste, and other standard precaution principles. Utilizes safe patient handling procedures. Support Duties for Diagnostic Services: Carries out special treatments and assists with procedures including follow-up care and observation. Gives meaningful instructions and explanations to patient regarding purposes of special diagnostic tests and procedures to the extent of the NA's knowledge. Strips, wipes down and remakes beds as needed. Assists with patient mailings. Assists with delivering lab work and pathology to the lab, scans reports into the appropriate GI folder. Security Duties: Keeps ward area clean and orderly; sets up, maintains and cleans equipment; reports defective equipment and safety hazards. Initiates Patient Belongings Inventory as detailed in the policy. Identifies and follows National Patient Safety Goals. Protects Patient privacy by closing computer screens when not in use, securing patient chart and paper work, and providing reasonable patient physical/environmental privacy. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., with flexibility to meet patient care and program needs. Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
